Computer - Program - Reading Area

Public Computer TerminalsPast the Circulation Desk is an open room that features our 2 Public Access computers and a comfortable reading area. First time users of the library's computers must read and understand the Policy and Guidelines for Use of the Public Access Computer and must sign a computer user registration form. Users under 18 years old must have the form co-signed by a parent or guardian in the presence of library staff.

One of the features on these computers is a link to the Vermont Online Library (VOL), a collection of electronic information databases provided by a partnership with the Vermont Department of Libraries. This resource if also available to you over the Web from your home or office. Information about accessing VOL is available at the library. Our collection of computer books are shelved next to the computers.

On the first Friday of each month, from 4 - 6 p.m., the Public Access computers are reserved so that we may provide informal training in basic computer and Internet use. Patrons of any age may drop in anytime during that 2-hour time slot to receive assistance in the area of computer use that best suits their needs.

Databases

Vermont Department of Libraries Catalog http://web2.libraries.vermont.gov/

Use this site to do online searches of academic, public, and regional libraries statewide.

*While the Fairlee Public Library does not currently have an online catalog, there is a way to determine if we probably own a particular title: Hint: Print these instructions for use as you move to another page

Go to http://web2.libraries.vermont.gov web page.

Click on Catalog link.

Click on Other Libraries link.

Click in box next to Public Library Catalog (selected) (PUBCAT).

Type your search in the Enter a word or phrase to search box and click on appropriate Search records by button.

On the "Summary of Results" page, click on link to PUBCAT results.

Look for FPL's symbol (VSR9) in your search results. (You can Ctrl/F to find the symbol or just scan the page manually.)

If you want to find out what other public libraries own the title, you can click on the Public Library Holding Codes link  to find out what libraries the other symbols belong to.

You can also broaden your search on the Other Libraries page by clicking in more boxes to search more databases.

If we own the title, you can copy the information and then email it to us so we can reserve the book for you.

*Any item that you would like that our library does not own, we can do an Inter-Library Loan to request it from another library. If an item is not available in Vermont, we can receive items from out-of-state libraries. Please note that out-of-state loans do take longer to receive. To request an Inter-Library Loan, please include your name and phone # and as much information as possible about the requested title. (Ex. Author, Title, Publisher, Date of publication) If you have a deadline, please let us know that as well.

Vermont Online Library http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/vol_f163 (Requires password--see below)

The Vermont Online Library is a collection of online databases that is available statewide for patrons of Vermont libraries. Brought to you in part by the Vermont Department of Libraries, this Gale Group suite of databases is a one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide-range of topics: business, current events, economics, education, health care, literature, art, and science. These databases include ones suitable for all ages from young children through adult.

Use VOL to search for magazine articles and other information, including many full-text magazine/journal articles and reference materials. VOL may be used in the library, or by library patrons at home with a password obtained from your local Vermont library. Call 802-333-4716, e-mail us, or visit the Fairlee Public Library during regular business hours to receive the password and other information for using this database.

Reading Area

Reading ChairsIn our reading area are 2 comfortable chairs, one of them donated in memory of Gertrude Mallary, and an antique library table which was donated by the Orford Lion's Club. There are also 2 chairs in front of the fireplace area.

Comfortable in front of the fireplaceThis space is also the room where most of our programs will be held. We have 25 new stacking chairs which should handle most of our needs. Our monthly Neighborhood Book Discussion meeting takes place in this area. (We generally meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, except December, and newcomers are always welcome.) Sign up and pick up your reading copy of the discussion book at the library anytime!

In this area are 2 bookcases one of which is used for special displays each month, and the other for our on-going book sale, and on the walls are some of our historic pictures.
